Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation is performed to enhance the size and shape of the breasts, or to correct asymmetry. In this procedure, Dr. Mathieson places the implant either below the breast or under the pectoralis major muscle to increase fullness and projection of the breast. The incisions can be placed under the arm, in the crease under the breast or around the nipple. Dr. Mathieson advises patients on the different types of implants available, both saline and silicone filled. In some patients, the augmentation should be performed in conjunction with a breast lift (mastopexy) to tighten the skin and reposition the nipple.

Breast Lift (Mastopexy)
When the breasts become droopy, or if the skin has stretched out as in massive weight loss patients, breasts must be lifted back to their normal position to achieve an aesthetically pleasing result. Dr. Mathieson reshapes the breast tissue itself, removes excess skin, and repositions the nipple in order to achieve this. Sometimes this procedure may be done with only limited incisions. If the patient so desires, breast volume may also be increased with simultaneous augmentation.

Breast Reduction
In patients with large, heavy breasts, breast reduction often alleviates patients' symptoms of back and neck pain, shoulder grooving, and poor posture. Dr. Mathieson removes portions of breast tissue and skin, moves the nipple to its normal position, and reshapes the tissues to create smaller and more aesthetically pleasing breasts. In certain instances this procedure may be performed with a limited scar, which eliminates the sometimes problematic scar in the crease under the breast. Following a breast reduction, many patients benefit from both physical and lifestyle improvements.

Breast Reconstruction
Modern surgical technology makes it possible to construct a natural-looking breast after mastectomy (breast removal) for cancer or other diseases. The procedure is commonly begun and sometimes completed immediately following mastectomy, so that the patient wakes with a new breast mound. Alternatively, reconstruction may begin years after mastectomy. There are several ways to reconstruct the breast, both with and without implants, tissue expander and muscle TRAM flap; your surgeon(s) should work together with you in deciding which is the best for you. Breast reconstruction does not affect the recurrence of cancer, does not cause any other diseases, and does not affect chemotherapy or radiation treatment.

Gynecomastia Correction
Men may develop enlargement of the breasts, either on one side or both sides of the chest. Dr. Mathieson corrects this condition by a combination of procedures, including liposuction and direct surgical removal of breast tissue. In most cases, the incisions are small and well camouflaged around the nipple and on the skin of the chest.
