Abdominoplasty
Abdominoplasty helps to flatten and shape the abdomen and waist by removing excess fat and skin and tightening muscles. The best candidates have pockets of fat or loose skin that haven't responded well to diet and exercise. The procedure can also be useful for women with stretched skin and muscles from pregnancy.
The procedure takes approximately two to five hours and can be performed with general anesthesia or local anesthesia with a sedative. Recovery time ranges from two weeks to a few months. With a balanced diet and regular exercise, results are long-lasting. Abdominoplasty will likely leave a permanent scar stretching between the hips, although it should be low enough for even a bikini to conceal it.

Liposuction
Liposuction is an ideal procedure to remove localized fatty deposits which do not improve with diet and exercise. In women, these areas may be around the abdomen, hips and thighs, and in men, the "love handles" at the waist line. During this surgery, Dr. Mathieson makes several small incisions in order to insert an instrument to infuse a special solution into the fatty layers under the skin. This solution minimizes the pain of surgery as well as blood loss. The fat is then removed using long, thin cannulas. Liposuction is not a method of weight loss and Dr. Mathieson does not perform large volume liposuction which may be fraught with higher risks and complications.

Body Lift
Often patients who have lost large amounts of weight either as a result of bariatric surgery or through diet and exercise have so much residual excess skin that a total body lift is required to improve their appearance. During this surgery, Dr. Mathieson removes the extra tissues circumferentially, resulting in a more extensive scar that continues around the entire trunk. The effect is a combination of an abdominoplasty and lateral and posterior thigh lift. For patient safety, and because of its extensive nature, this procedure is usually not done in combination with any other surgery.
